How big are we?
As of December 2004, PSAC had 159,954 members. This was significantly down from our peak in the early 1980s of about 182,000. We lost members after this point due to “downsizing” in the federal public service and hit a low of 141,500 in 1998. Our numbers are growing again, mainly because we've increase our membership in the territories, federal employment is on the rebound and we've organized new members in a variety of sectors.
PSAC in the Canadian Labour Movement
According to the most recent figures (March 2004) from HRSDC's Labour Directory, PSAC was the sixth largest union in Canada in 2004 and the third largest public sector union, after the Canadian Union of Public Employees and the National Union of Public and General Employees.
