Bill C-257:  Take a minute to contact Liberal MP Mario Silva

PSAC members are up on Parliament Hill today and tomorrow participating in a CLC-organized lobby of Members of Parliament.  They are working to ensure that Bill C-257, the anti-scab bill, passes the Third Reading vote on Wednesday evening, March 21.

MP Mario Silva, the Liberal labour critic, voted in favour of C-257 at Second Reading.  Now, he has changed his mind and is influencing others in his party to withdraw their support.  MP Silva claims that employers will no longer be able to provide essential services if C-257 is passed.  However, essential services are covered by the Canada Labour Code.  In addition, amendments to C-257 were made in Committee to ensure that C-257 does not supersede anything in the Code.

The only thing wrong with C-257 is that employers don’t like the Bill.  MP Silva needs to hear from union members about his flip-flop on C-257.

Take a little time to call of e-mail MP Silva and let him know that working people expect more fairness and balance in federal labour law and that C-257 will help achieve this.

Bill C-257 Update

Bill C-257 is still at the Parliamentary Committee stage. The Committee that has been dealing with the Bill is the Standing Committee on Human Resources, Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities of the House of Commons (HUMA for short). Read the details.

December 21 , 2006

Keep meeting with your MPs!

The PSAC, along with the Canadian Labour Congress, the Canadian Auto Workers and the Canadian Union of Public Employees, appeared before the Standing Committee on Human Resources, Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities on December 5, 2006, to ask MPs to listen to the voices of Canadian workers and adopt Bill C-257, the anti-scab legislation. Unfortunately, presentations were strictly limited to a maximum of seven minutes.

In preparation of the third and final reading of the bill, big and small business representatives have launched an aggressive campaign to make sure MPs will vote against that new legislation early next year. The Committee has also adopted a motion to extend the days alloted for presentations before the Committee to essentially allow more presentations by those groups opposing the legislation. In light of this, we must make every effort to ensure that MPs continue to hear from us.

The House of Commons is now adjourned until January 29, 2007, and MPs have returned to their ridings. We must continue to meet with MPs between now and then to confirm and build support for this legislation which will help bring some balance between workers and their employers.

We encourage you to call or better yet, pay your MP a visit early in the new year. Check to see if your MP supported the Bill. Even if your MP supported the Bill during the second reading, it is essential that we get a commitment for their support for the third reading. You can also use the PSAC's email your MP service to let your MP know how important this bill is for working people in Canada and to urge them to support it.

Let's make sure that anti-scab legislation is adopted once and for all !
