Term employment

When there are temporary vacancies because indeterminate employees are on leave, in acting or on development assignments, short-term projects or if there is fluctuating workload, term employment has an important role to play. But, over the years, term employment in the public service has strayed from its intended purpose and too many employees have been kept in a “temporary” status for extended periods of time. This status has made these union members feel insecure and like they are living their lives “on hold”. Too often, these members have felt our union doesn’t care.

The union has been working hard on the issue. During the last rounds of bargaining at both Treasury Board and the Canadian Customs and Revenue Agency, the PSAC took action on term employment. We are now seeing the results.
