Nycole Turmel re-elected PSAC President

MONTREAL – Nycole Turmel was re-elected this morning as the National President of the Public Service Alliance of Canada, on the last day of the Triennial Convention which was held this week in Montreal. Turmel was elected by acclamation by the 400 delegates present on the convention floor.

“I am committed to ensuring better working conditions, and negotiating the best possible collective agreements,” said Turmel right after her election. “I will work to make the PSAC a more inclusive union, one that listens to all of its members.”

Nycole Turmel has been a member of the PSAC’s executive committee since 1991 and National President since 2000. She has been active in the union in elected positions at the local, regional and national level since 1979.

John Gordon was re-elected National Executive Vice-President, also by acclamation.

“This union has moved tremendously in the last three years,” said Gordon. “I am committed to building the Social Justice Fund and concluding collective agreements by their expiry date.”

Before being elected as the National Executive Vice-President at the 2000 Triennial Convention, Gordon was president of the Union of Public Works Employees, a former Component of the PSAC, for 15 years.

In a three-way contest, Robyn Benson was elected alternate National Executive Vice-President.

In a series of regional caucuses, delegates elected seven Regional Executive Vice-Presidents to complete the union’s nine-member executive committee.  They are:

  • Tony White, Regional Executive Vice-President - Atlantic

  • Jérôme Turcq, Regional Executive Vice-President - Quebec

  • Ed Cashman, Regional Executive Vice-President - National Capital Region

  • Gerry Halabecki, Regional Executive Vice-President - Ontario

  • Robyn Benson, Regional Executive Vice-President - Prairies

  • Patty Ducharme, Regional Executive Vice-President - British Columbia

  • Jean-François Des Lauriers, Regional Executive Vice-President - North

All elected officers take up their duties effective immediately.
