Canada Post strike hits Ottawa
Ottawa – The strike at Canada Post hits Ottawa
today, December 13, as 200 members of the Public Service Alliance
of Canada (PSAC) are on the picket line at the Canada Post “C” building
on Brookfield Road in Ottawa. This rotating strike is part
of a plan of action that will impact all points of service at Canada
Post.
Last Thursday, pickets were up in Antigonish, Nova Scotia and Fredericton,
New-Brunswick, while picketers were out in Edmonton on December
10.
While workers in Ottawa are on strike today, talks are on going
with Canada Post. The outstanding issues include health benefits,
severance pay, various leaves, job security, staffing of positions
and salaries.
In November, the 2500 PSAC members at Canada Post voted 73% in
favour of strike action. Negotiations with Canada Post started last
July.
The PSAC members at Canada Post provide customer service
and perform administrative, financial, technical and professional
duties. Two thirds of the workers are women.
