MEDIA ADVISORY
20 years later, Parliament Hill workers still without health and safety protection
Ottawa – Brian Mulroney was Canada's Prime minister when Bill C-45, the Parliamentary Employment and Staff Relations Act, was adopted in 1986. Part III of that act contained health and safety protection intended to Hill workers. However, 20 years later, Mulroney, Kim Campbell, Jean Chrétien and Paul Martin all failed to have that part of the legislation enacted, making Parliament Hill workers the only workers in Canada without basic occupational health and safety protection.
It is now Stephen Harper's turn. Will he offer to Parliament Hill workers the same health and safety protection enjoyed by other workers in Canada?
Representatives of the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC), the Ontario Federation of Labour, the NDP, the Bloc Québécois, the Liberal Party and the Conservative Party will remind the current Prime minister of the failures of his predecessors at the press conference on Parliament Hill on Tuesday, June 6, 2006.
