April 8, 2008
Your bargaining team met with the employer for four days of collective bargaining from April 1- 4 and the parties reached agreement on three issues.
The parties were able to resolve a classification issue that had forced the union to file a policy grievance against the employer after the employer arbitrarily changed a plan that had been agreed to by the Joint Job Evaluation Committee (JJEC). The union and the employer have tentatively agreed in writing that all jobs will be evaluated using the plan as developed by the JJEC. The parties have also tentatively agreed to include the plan in the collective agreement so that any proposed changes to the plan must be agreed to in writing by both parties.
On another issue, the union has agreed to expand the use of term assignments provided that the term assignment is offered to the most senior qualified employee. This is a major breakthrough for seniority rights. Currently the employer may choose who will be assigned a term position without considering seniority.
Your bargaining team was also able to increase the number of months of recall for junior employees. This is important because the employer has so far refused to guarantee that there will not be lay-offs in the near future.
Your bargaining team will be returning to the table April 10 - 11 to continue negotiating on your behalf. Please contact your bargaining team for questions and also to find out how you can demonstrate your support for your team.
Your team members are: Michel Sylvestre, Claude Morel, Stan Mackenzie and Dan Charron.
