Our Sisters and Brothers from PSAC Local 00780 were certified on March 28th, 2008. The unit consists of 75 elementary school teachers and other members who work in support roles related to the education of students.
We began negotiations with the Employer, the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne in August and the negotiation process is ongoing. Progress has been steady and we are moving through the non-monetary issues. Monetary demands will be tabled at the appropriate time.
The bargaining team is strong and determined to reach a fair and just collective agreement with the employer. The members of the bargaining unit have been very supportive of the process and their bargaining team.
This will be the first collective agreement for these new PSAC members. They can count on the full support of the PSAC organization.
“It is with great pride that we stand with our First Nations sisters and brothers of PSAC Local 00780,” says Gerry Halabecki, PSAC Regional Executive Vice-President for Ontario. “Joining a strong national union like the PSAC will help them to protect their rights and to improve their salaries and working conditions,” Halabecki added.
We encourage members to continue to contact their local union representatives to offer their support. The team returns to the bargaining table October 29 and 30, and November 18 and 19.
In solidarity,
The bargaining team:
