Sir/Madam:

I write to you as National President of the 160,000-member Public Service Alliance of Canada and particularly the 2,100 PSAC members employed by Canada Post Corporation.

Over the course of a four-week strike, Canada Post Corporation repeatedly requested that we put its final offer to a membership vote. Last weekend we did and our members overwhelmingly rejected it, as we knew they would.

Here's why. Canada Post decided to use the bargaining process with one of the smallest unionized groups within its workforce to replace sick leave and family-related leave with a short-term disability program.

Our members at Canada Post are fighting for basic working conditions. They simply cannot accept a collective agreement that does not protect their sick leave and family-related leave.

Now that the PSAC membership has spoken, the ball is clearly in Canada Post's court. On our membership's behalf, I urge you to review your mandate, drop your demand for concessions and return to the bargaining table.

Sincerely,

John Gordon,
National President,
Public Service Alliance of Canada
