Grain System Under Threat Says Study

Regulations to ensure food and transportation safety and environmental protections are important. Surveys demonstrate that Canadians understand this and support the development and enforcement of regulations to safeguard and govern many of the activities and exchanges that take place in the public sphere.

PSAC members – many of whom work behind the scenes to enforce and police critical regulatory regimes – understand this too. PSAC members also know that regulatory development and enforcement play a key role in defending quality public services. Unfortunately, much of the Canadian public is insufficiently aware of the work that goes on behind the scenes until there is a crisis.

The fact that so much of this work goes on under the radar makes it vulnerable to politically-motivated attempts to devalue, discredit and discount the value of these services to the Canadian public.

PDF Threatened Harvest: Protecting Canada's world-class grain system, the recently-released report by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, exposes this dynamic at work in the Harper government's ongoing attempts to dismantle Canada's public grain management and marketing system.
