Answer the Ontario Region NJC Living Cost Differential Survey
PSAC has learned that Statistics Canada plans to conduct a survey of the Ontario Region in mid-October, 2009, in order to calculate the Living Cost Differential (LCD) Indexes for the Isolated Posts and Government Housing Directive. The survey will use a combination of paper surveys and site visits.
The LCD Index calculated by Statistics Canada is the sole determining factor of the value of the allowance paid to members who live and work in areas where the prices for goods and services are significantly higher as compared to urban areas.
The survey will ask members to list the price they pay for household staples including food as well as a myriad of other goods and services including insurance, transportation, dry cleaning and daycare. Members are strongly encouraged to complete the surveys fully and accurately.
Why is your participation in this survey important? Membership participation is crucial because if Statistics Canada does not gather enough hard data from the surveys, it will instead rely on information extrapolated from a combination of on- site visits and whatever surveys have been submitted. This can result in the LCD index being calculated based on skewed data. When this has occurred in the past, we have seen a negative impact on the value of the allowance, resulting in a reduction or even elimination of the allowance.
Keep your eyes open for the survey, spread the word,
