Health and Safety

It's Time to Enact Health and Safety Legislation for Parliament Hill Workers

Parliamentary Employment Staff Relations Act Part III

Consider the Following Facts

  • Cases of a refusal leading to a partial workplace closure are very rare.

  • Most situations are corrected without the intervention of a safety officer, usually during a regular workplace inspection.

  • Every provincial and territorial legislature have workers covered by their respective provincial and territorial health and safety acts.

  • The provincial/territorial legislatures have not shut down even though their workers are covered by similar health and safety protection as any other Canadian worker.

  • Workers in the United States employed by the U.S. Congress have finally been awarded with the same type of health and safety protection as other U.S. workers in 1995.

  • To date, there has not been workplace closures or workplace disturbances that would impact on the normal operation of the U.S. Congress.
