Health and Safety

It's Time to Enact Health and Safety Legislation for Parliament Hill Workers

Parliamentary Employment Staff Relations Act Part III

What is the Employer really afraid of?

Does it cost too much money to ensure a safe and healthy workplace for employees?

Is it too costly to ensure employees do not have to miss work because they are ill through unhealthy working areas or because they are at home attempting to recover from accidental injury at work?

What about members of the general public and the politicians themselves?--Is it safe for anyone to be on Parliament Hill?

Are they worried about a work refusal shutting down Parliament Hill?

Some of the Members of Parliament believe that there is the possibility that Parliament Hill could be shut down as a result of a work refusal under a section of the Canada Labour Code. This is a myth. There is a process of investigating and resolving problems before a work refusal will result in the a disruption of the normal operation of Parliament. There is no evidence that law and order have fallen apart in other jurisdictions where workers have health and safety legislation.
