Earth Day – April 22, 2012
On April 22nd more than six million Canadians will join worldwide events aimed at raising awareness of the environment.
The 2012 federal budget made further cuts to core Canadian environmental programs, including Fisheries and Oceans Canada and Environment Canada. The federal budget also weakened environmental laws and protections. These cuts will push some core services to the breaking point and further unravel the safety net of laws that protect nature — and all of us.
This budget was full of cuts to core public services, including cuts to clean technology research and development while billion-dollar subsidies to the oil and gas industry remain. We all know that strong public services are needed for the enforcement and protection of the environment.
Earth Day needs to be a turning point to advance climate policy, energy efficiency, renewable energy and green jobs. By participating in local and regional events, you can join the more than one billion people in 190 countries that are taking action for Earth Day.
Of special interest this year is the Earth Day event that will be held in Montréal. 22avril.org is an initiative from citizens from different walks of life, labour organisations and environmental groups. It aims to be the largest gathering for the environment in the history of Québec.
If you are in the Montréal area and you care about defending our shared resources, the distribution of wealth, the rights of each and every citizen, and respect for the environment, join the movement on April 22.
We encourage all our members to make Earth Day a day to raise the consciousness of every citizen around the world on environmental issues critical to the surviving of our planet.
